These are some of the teacher institutes I have attended since 2018, each offering meaningful opportunities to engage in immersive, place-based learning, deepen my content knowledge, and connect with educators and experts across disciplines. These experiences have strengthened my instructional practice and expanded how I bring real-world learning into the classroom. I'm attending Colonial Williamsburg again this year, stay tuned for the blog post and podcast. I am also currently planning to attend Approaching Walden and The Teacher Institute for Watershed Science and Conservation in 2027.
The Colonial Williamsburg Teacher Institute is an immersive professional learning experience that brings educators into the heart of early American history through place-based learning, primary sources, and historical interpretation. Participants engage with historians and reenactors to strengthen inquiry-based teaching and bring colonial and revolutionary history to life in the classroom. I had the opportunity to attend this institute in 2018 and have been awarded a scholarship to attend again this summer. I will be arriving in Colonial Williamsburg on July 4th, just in time to celebrate the 250th birthday of the United States. You can follow my journey here, as well as on The Traveling Teacher on Facebook and Instagram.
